Justin Bieber, one of the most recognizable names and faces in the world today (especially on Instagram and other social media) sparked quite a reaction with a single comment in the wake of another pop star’s death. On Thursday, April 21, the world discovers the news that Prince has died. Soon musicians flood the web and net with reactions of bereaved shock. “And just like that…the world lost a lot of magic” from Katie Perry. Boy George “Today is the worst day ever!” In the midst of all this, Bieber enrages Prince fans the world over with a wildly insensitive comment.
Which has of course since deleted. Too late.
Singer/songwriter Andrew Watt posted on Instagram “Today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself… the last of the greatest living performers… his connection to ALL his instruments yielded a sexual transcending aura…”
At this point Bieber responded with “Not the last of the greatest living performers.”
To be fair several interpretations of this comment offer themselves. Perhaps the most crass is that Bieber himself deserves the title. Or perhaps he meant someone else—which, while a valid opinion, remains a stunningly tasteless thing to say in context. Maybe worse would be some kind of implied joke, Prince no long being alive after all.
Fans have been less than forgiving. “Love Canada hate @justinbieber so much…” “…tasteless, disrespectful and lacked sensitivity and proof once again that Bieber needed to spend more time in a classroom…” “You’ll NEVER be a legend like Prince.” “…a no talent wanna be . who won’t be remembered the day he dies” “lmao little boy you are a joke you are not nor will ever be on a prince level…” “Justin NEVER produced his songs! His voice is mediocre…”
So far Bieber has offered no other comment.
